“Las ventajas de ser invisible” es una novela escrita por Stephen Chbosky, publicada en 1999. Es una historia sobre los cambios que implica comenzar con la escuela secundaria, y en particular lo que representa para el personaje principal, como las personas con las que se relaciona van cambiando el rumbo de su vida.

Este es un libro que leí hace ya un par de años, y que cuando lo termine lo primero que pensé fue “que lastima que no lo leí cuando estaba en el secundario”, no porque la historia sea durante esa época de la vida, sino porque tal vez lo habría apreciado de otra manera.

Se centra en la vida de Charlie, un chico que comienza en secundario, a la dificultad de comenzar una nueva etapa y querer relacionarse con chicos de su edad se le suma que tiene una personalidad tímida, y el haber pasado por ciertas situaciones muy tristes.

El texto está escrito en forma de cartas dirigidas al lector, en las cuales Charlie expone su situación diaria en la escuela, las personas que lo rodean y cuenta sus secretos y sentimientos más profundos. Conoce a Sam y Patrick, de los que se hace amigo y comienza a descubrir un mundo que para él era desconocido y va transformando su vida.  

Otra de las personas que comienza a influir en su vida es su profesor de literatura, el cual lo incentiva a expresarse y leer, y a empezar a definir su futuro.

A lo largo del texto nos va revelando historias de su vida, su familia y la relación con ellos, como va transitando su primer año de secundaria y como su vida cambia de acuerdo con las decisiones que toma.

Mi personaje “favorito” es su profesor de literatura Bill, que le recomienda leer varios libros que lo van guiando durante el año. Me hubiese encantado tener un profesor así, lástima que no todos tienen esa inspiración para enseñar XD.

Se lo recomendaría a cualquier persona, pero en especial a los que están en esa etapa “conflictiva” ya que tiene muchos consejos y puntos de vista interesantes. Es un muy buen libro sobre las relaciones humanas, el aprendizaje y las influencias que uno tiene (desde un libro hasta los consejos de las personas).

“The perks of being a wallflower” is novel written by Stephen Chbosky, published in 1999. It´s a story about the changes that implicates beginning high school, and in particular what it represents to the main character, how the people he chooses to bond with start changing the course of his life.

This is a book that I read a couple years ago, and when I finished it the first thig I thought was “it´s a shame that I didn´t read this book sooner when I was in high school”. Not because the story happens in that part of life, but because I would have appreciated it in other way.

It centers in Charlie´s life, a boy that begins high school. To the difficulty of beginning a new stage in life and wanting to meet new people, it´s added a shy personality and had gone through some very sad situations.

The text was written as letter for the reader, in where Charlie tells his daily situation at school, people that surround him, and he tells his secrets and deeper feelings. He meets Sam and Patrick, with whom he starts a friendship and starts to discover a new world that for him is unknown and changes his life.

Another person that has an influence in Charlie´s life is his literature teacher, he encourages him to express himself and read, and begin defining his future.

Throughout the text he will reveal stories of his life, his family and the relationship with them, how he is passing his first year of high school and how his life changes with the decisions that he made.

My "favorite" character is his literature professor Bill, which encourages Charlie to read several books that will guide him through the year. I would love to have a teacher like him as well, it´s a pity that not everyone has that inspiration to teach XD.

I would recommend it to anyone, but especially those in that "conflict" stage, the book has many advices and interesting views. It is a very good book about human relationships, learning and influences that one has (from a book to the advice of people).

Dracula

Who doesn´t know the character Dracula now days? But do you really know one of the most important fantastic novels? Even though we all heard about this story, not many really know it. That´s why I chose this opportunity to write about it.

Dracula was written by Bram Stoker, in 1897. The story is set in the 19^th century in England, and tells how a group of people is involved in different situations that are leading to one conclusion, the possible existence of mythical creatures: the vampires.
Stoker wrote the novel in the form of diaries and letters, so you can meet the characters intimately, their fears, desires, regrets, etc. Among the "writers" you will find, one of the main characters, Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer who is happily engaged with Wilhemina ("Mina") Murray (another of those who give us the facts). It is also Dr. John Seward, a psychiatrist full time, who dedicated his life to studying the behavior of their patients, including a zoophagous (eats living animals). In addition, letters and telegraphs appear with other important characters like Lucy Westerna, which is the best friend of mine, Arthur Holmwood, a young nobleman, Quincey Morris, an American businessman, and inevitably Van Helsing.

Part of the story takes place in Transylvania, home of Count Dracula, where Jonathan Harker went to close a contract with the cCount. There he meets strange situations that lead him to doubt his sanity, so he decides to investigate and see what happens, and then realizes that he is a prisoner in the castle of Dracula.

Another part of the story takes place in England where Mina is visiting her friend Lucy in the city of Whitby. Here also begins to happen various suspicious facts, both in the city and in the lives of the two young ladies.
On the other hand, there is the appearance of a mysterious ship with a dead on board and no crew. The dead man turns out to be the ship's captain, of whom they find his diary, which recounts what was happening with the crew. On the other hand, the young Lucy begins to suffer from insomnia, what weakens her slowly and appears there is no solution. That is why his friend, Dr. Seward, decides to contact his teacher Van Helsing, who is an expert on issues that go beyond normal understanding of people.

From that moment, start to come together all the details and experiences of each of the characters in order to find and destroy Count Dracula.

Honestly, at first the book hook me up on reading, it was all very interesting and engaging. Going a little further, it became a heavy reading, at least for my taste, making at the half of the book to lose interest. But if you read it completely, it returns to its initial impulse.
It is one of those classics that MUST be read, although I would recommend to read it with time and patience. When you end you can help but think that is a great history and completely worth reading. Once the characters spend their time trying to capture and destroy Dracula, they will slowly discover the true story about him, as well as what powers and why they find him increasingly stronger, both physically and mentally. This book has a thrilling final (WHAT A FINAL!!), which leaves you the feeling of having read a great story.

I was very surprised one of the characters; I had the feeling of a different Van Helsing. I imagined him as a hermit man, who was not interested in anything but himself and finding out about mythological beings (clearly the film "Van Helsing" became very stuck in my head), and I found a nice character, affectionate, like a father to everyone, willing to risk his life for those who he loves and appreciate. I honestly did not expect that.

Many may know that there are several versions that claim that Bram Stoker based his Dracula character on a real person.
One version is the Emperor of Romania Vlad Tepes, "the Impaler", which is known for its torture methods and their penchant for killing people for pleasure.
Another is Elisabeth Bathory, "Bloody Countess", he believed that blood had rejuvenating powers, and I think no need to explain more .... XD!

Undoubtedly, the vampire is one of the mythological beings that abounds in fantasy stories and that one more passionate about knowing the different versions. For them and for those who want to know this classic, it is more than recommended.

Drácula

¿Quién no conoce el personaje de Drácula hoy en día? ¿Pero realmente conocen una de las más importantes novelas fantásticas? Si bien todos escuchamos alguna vez hablar sobre este relato, no muchos realmente lo conocen. Es por eso que elegí en esta oportunidad hablar de ésta novela.

Drácula fue escrita por Bram Stoker, en 1897. La historia está ambientada en el siglo XIX, en Inglaterra, y relata como un grupo de personas se ve involucrada en diferentes situaciones que los van llevando a una sola conclusión, la posible existencia de criaturas míticas: los vampiros.

Stoker escribió esta novela en forma de diarios y cartas, por lo que conocerán a los personajes de manera intima, sus miedos, deseos, lamentaciones, etc. Entre los “escritores” encontramos a uno de los personajes principales, Jonathan Harker, un joven abogado que se encuentra felizmente comprometido con Wilhemina (“Mina”) Murray (otra de los que nos transmiten los hechos). También se encuentra el doctor John Seward, un psiquiatra de tiempo completo, que dedica su vida a estudiar el comportamiento de sus pacientes, en particular el de un zoófago (come animales vivos). Además, aparecen cartas y telégrafos con otros personajes muy importantes como Lucy Westerna, que es la mejor amiga de Mina, Arthur Holmwood, un joven aristócrata, Quincey Morris, un empresario estadounidense, y el infaltable Van Helsing.

Parte de la historia transcurre en Transilvania, hogar del Conde Drácula, a donde Jonathan Harker se dirigió para cerrar unos contratos con el Conde. Allí se encuentra con situaciones extrañas que lo hacen dudar de su cordura, por lo que decide investigar y ver qué ocurre, para luego darse cuenta que se encuentra prisionero en el castillo de Drácula.

Otra parte de la historia sucede en Inglaterra, donde Mina se encuentra visitando a su amiga Lucy en la cuidad de Whitby. Aquí también comienzan a suceder diferentes hechos sospechosos, tanto en la cuidad como en la vida de las dos jóvenes.

Por una parte, está la aparición de un barco misterioso, con un muerto a bordo y sin tripulación aparente. El muerto resulta ser el capitán del barco, de quien encuentran su diario donde relata lo que fue sucediendo con la tripulación. Y por otro lado, la joven Lucy comienza a sufrir de insomnio, lo que la va debilitando lentamente y para lo que parece no haber solución. Es por esto que un amigo suyo, el doctor Seward, decide ponerse en contacto con su maestro: Van Helsing, quien es un experto en cuestiones que van más allá de la comprensión normal de las personas.

A partir de ese momento comienzan a unirse todos los detalles y las vivencias de cada uno de los personajes con el fin de encontrar y destruir al Conde Drácula.

Sinceramente, en un principio me enganche mucho con la lectura, era todo muy interesante y atrapante. Al avanzar un poco más, se tornó pesada, por lo menos para mi gusto, haciendo que hacia la mitad del libro vaya perdiendo el interés. Pero si uno sigue leyendo todo vuelve hacia su impulso inicial.

Es uno de esos clásicos que se DEBE leer, aunque yo lo recomendaría para leerlo con tiempo y paciencia. Cuando finaliza uno no puede dejar de pensar que es una excelente historia y que vale la pena completamente su lectura. Una vez que los personajes dedican su tiempo a la captura y destrucción de Drácula, van descubriendo poco a poco la verdadera historia del mismo, así como también qué poderes tiene y porque cada vez lo encuentran más fuerte, tanto física como mentalmente. Tiene un final emocionante (QUE FINAL!!), que te deja esa sensación de haber leído una historia genial.

Me sorprendió mucho uno de los personajes, yo tenía la sensación de un Van Helsing diferente. Me lo imaginaba como un hombre ermitaño, al que no le interesaba más que él mismo y averiguar sobre seres mitológicos (claramente la película “Van Helsing” se quedó muy grabada en mi cabeza), y me encontré con un personaje tierno, cariñoso, como un padre para todos, dispuesto a arriesgar su vida por aquellos a quienes quiere y aprecia. No me lo esperaba sinceramente.

Muchos tal vez conocen que hay varias versiones que afirman que Bram Stoker basó su personaje de Drácula en una persona real.

Una de las versiones es la del emperador de Rumania Vlad Tepes, “El empalador”, al cual se lo conoce por sus métodos de tortura y por su afición por asesinar personas por puro placer.

Otra es Elisabeth Báthory, “La condesa sangrienta”, que creía que la sangre tenia poderes rejuvenecedores, y creo que no hace falta que explique más…. XD!

Sin lugar a dudas, el vampiro es uno de los seres mitológicos que abunda en las historias de fantasía y que a mas de uno le apasiona conocer las diferentes versiones. Para ellos y para los que desean conocer este clásico, está más que recomendado.

“The name of the wind” is the first book of the saga “The kingkiller chronicle: day one”. Not only is the first book of the saga but also the first one published by the author Patrick Rithfuss.

In this fantastic story we meet Kvothe, and we find a whole new world. It has its own story, weird beings, magic, its geography (something that I love) and life lessons.

The story tells the life of Kvothe (pronounced “cuouz”), a red haired with green eyes young man (I highlight that because those details are what make him striking inside the story) with a curious personality and a brilliant mind capable of gaining knowledge extremely fast.

All this set of things make the main character one of thos epic characters that you love from the beginning till the end.  

It is told from Kvothe point of view, this first book is the first day of his narration, in which after thinking about it, he decides to tell his own story and publish it, for which he will need three days (that is why the trilogy).

There we see how someone like him reached his current state, his whole story from when he met his great master who discovered his intelligence, his parents and their relationship, the belief of beings from tails and legends, how he uses his cleverness to battle poverty, his love for music, the importance of friends and why not the enemies, and the turns of a love that seem unreachable.

All this, plus the feelings of the main character in every situation that he has to face, makes the reader to understand him, his suffer and joy.

Besides, it has a variety of characters, but without being lost while reading thinking who is who. There are good characters, bad, very bad, crazy ones, fugitives, wise and those that give help in exchange of some favors.

Every success in the life of the protagonist leaves us a lesson to carry and to value even the smallest things in life.

At the beginning of the book, the author thanks his parents and I want to highlight that when he thanks his father for teaching him that if he wanted to make something right he should take his time. I remarked that because in this piece we can value the time that the author put in it, and the quality in every detail and the attention that he put while writing, making it one of the bests novels that I read in this last time.

I also remark it because once as a reader you became a fan of a saga you expect the authors to publish the following books quick, and it is not something that favors the story. With patience, it will surely have an end that will live us with that sensation of having read an excellent story.  

It´s been a while since I wanted to buy this book, first I read the synopsis and it captured my attention immediately, after I read some comments about it they made me want to read it even more, until I finally bought it and started it with high expectations. And I can assure you that it totally reached them. It´s an excellent book, and I can´t wait to read the next one.

It´s pretty extensive, but the reading is really entertaining and when you realize it you are already at the half of the book. And when you reach the end you only want to know more.

It is a book that I recommend to everyone, in which you find everything that you can expect of a great story and more. And this is just my opinion as a fan but I can´t find anything bad about it. It´s worth the time to read this great story, that in my opinion is excellent and from which I expect the same quality in the next books.

El nombre del viento

Nombre: Crónica del asesino de reyes: El nombre del viento.

“El nombre del viento” es el primer libro de la saga “Crónica del asesino de reyes: primer dia”. No solo es el primer libro de la saga sino también el primero publicado por el autor Patrick Rothfuss.

En este relato fantástico nos encontramos con Kvothe, y con un mundo completamente nuevo. Con su propia historia, seres extraños, magia, su propia geografía (cosa que particularmente me encanta) y muchas lecciones de vida.    

La historia cuenta la vida de Kvothe (se pronuncia “cuouz”), un joven pelirrojo de ojos verdes (lo destaco porque esos detalles lo hacen llamativo dentro de la historia) con una personalidad curiosa y una mente brillante con la capacidad de adquirir conocimientos extremadamente rápido.

Todo este conjunto de cosas hacen que el protagonista sea uno de esos personajes épicos que uno ama desde que empieza a leer hasta que termina.

Está contada a partir del punto de vista de Kvothe,  este primer libro es el primer día de su relato, en el cual después de analizarlo decide contar su propia historia y publicarla, y para lo que necesitará tres días (de ahí que sea una trilogía).

Allí vemos cómo es que una persona como él llegó a su estado actual, toda su historia a partir de que conoció a su gran maestro que fue el que descubrió su destacada inteligencia, sus padres y su relación con ellos, la creencia en seres de cuentos y leyendas, cómo utiliza su ingenio para combatir la pobreza, su gran amor por la música, la importancia de los amigos y porque no de los enemigos, y las vueltas de un amor al que parece no poder acercarse.

Todo esto sumado a los sentimientos del protagonista en cada situación a la que se enfrenta hace que uno como lector se compenetre con el personaje, sufra y se alegre con él.

Además, tiene una gran variedad de personajes, pero sin que uno se pierda demasiado en la lectura pensando quien es quien. Están como siempre los buenos, los malos, los malos más malos, los locos, los fugitivos, los sabios y los que prestan su ayuda a cambio de algún favor.

Cada suceso en la vida del protagonista nos deja una enseñanza a tener en cuenta y a valorar hasta las cosas mas pequeñas de todos los días.

Al comienzo del libro, el autor le agradece a sus padres y quiero destacar el agradecimiento que le da al padre por haberle enseñado a que si quería hacer algo bien debía tomarse su tiempo. Lo hago porque en esta obra se nota el tiempo invertido del autor, y la calidad que le da a la misma cada detalle que hay y la atención que prestó a la hora de escribir, haciéndola una de las mejores novelas que leí en este último tiempo.

También lo resalto porque una vez que uno como lector se convierte en fanático de una saga espera que los autores publiquen los libros siguientes con rapidez, y no es algo que favorezca para nada a la historia. Con paciencia seguramente tenga un final que nos deje a todos con esa sensación de haber sido parte de una historia excelente.

Hace mucho que tenía pensado leer este libro, primero leí la sinopsis y me llamo mucho la atención, después leí varios comentarios que hicieron que tenga más ganas de leerlo, hasta que finalmente me lo compre, y lo comencé a leer con altas expectativas. Y les puedo decir que cumplió altamente con ellas. Es un libro excelente, y no veo la hora de poder leer la segunda parte.

Es bastante extenso, pero la lectura es muy entretenida y cuando uno se quiere dar cuenta ya va por la mitad del libro. Y cuando llegas al final solo querés saber más.

Es un libro recomendable para cualquier persona, en el que uno encuentra todo lo que puede esperar de una gran historia y más también. Y esto seguramente lo diga porque me fanatice enseguida, pero no le encuentro nada malo. Vale la pena invertirle tiempo a esta gran historia, que en mi opinión es excelente y de la que espero que siga con la misma calidad que tuvo esta primera entrega.
